Job Description
Who are we?
Cohere is the leading security-first enterprise AI company. We build cutting-edge foundation AI models and end-to-end products that are designed to solve real-world business problems.
We’re training and deploying frontier models for enterprises who are building AI systems. We believe that our work is instrumental to the widespread adoption of AI and we are looking for folks that want to be part of that.
We obsess over what we build. Each one of us is responsible for contributing to increasing the capabilities of our models and the value they drive for our customers. Cohere is a team of researchers, engineers, designers, and more, who are all passionate about their craft.
We are a global technology company headquartered in Toronto with key offices in London, New York City, San Francisco, Montreal, Paris, Berlin and Seoul. Join us!
Why this role?
The Web team builds cohere.com , the public face of Cohere. We work with marketing, design, and leadership to ship polished pages quickly: landing experiences, content-driven UI, and the CMS systems behind them.
As a Web Developer, you will:
-
Work closely with a small team of engineers, designers, and marketing partners
-
Build and iterate on growth-focused UI: styling, layout, and content-driven pages
-
Work with content editors so publishing is faster and less painful. Better workflows, clearer schemas, fewer gotchas
-
Ship experiments and marketing features that help people discover and try Cohere
-
Build in Next.js, TypeScript, and Tailwind, including the Sanity schemas that power the site
-
Improve performance and reliability where it actually moves the needle, not chase tech for its own sake
-
Use AI coding tools every day, while owning what you merge: you should be able to debug, explain, and stand behind the code
You may be a good fit if:
-
You’ve spent 2+ years shipping production React/TypeScript apps and care about polish and performance
-
You’re comfortable with Next.js and a headless CMS like Sanity or ready to ramp up quickly
-
You like partnering with design and marketing, and you leave code a bit clearer than you found it
-
You’re excited to try new tools when they help, and skip them when they don’t
-
You care about the end result for users, not just the framework of the week
Bonus: Eye for design or motion; a portfolio, GitHub, or shipped marketing work. Familiarity with monorepos (pnpm/Turborepo) or Vercel is a plus.
Full-Time Employees at Cohere enjoy these Perks:
-
A weekly lunch stipend of $75/£75 or equivalent in your local currency for lunch.
-
Full health and dental benefits, including a separate budget for mental health.
-
RRSP matching, 401K, Pension Scheme.
-
100% Parental Leave top-up for up to 6 months, for either parent.
-
Annual enrichment benefits:
Arts & culture, fitness/wellness, quality time, and a workspace improvement credit.
Education & learning stipend for conferences, courses, and coaching.
-
6 weeks of paid vacation (30 working days!)
-
Budget for traveling to other offices if you are remote, plus an annual company offsite.
How and Where We Work:
-
Cohere is remote-friendly, but we also have offices in Toronto, London, New York City, San Francisco, Montreal, Paris, Berlin and Seoul with more opening soon.
-
For those in the office: a daily lunch program, plenty of snacks, and regular community and social events.
-
For those not near an office: a co-working benefit so you can work alongside others in your city.
-
Everyone receives a $500 home office stipend to set up your workspace properly.
If any of the above doesn’t line up exactly with your experience, we still encourage you to apply.
We strive to create an inclusive work environment for all; we welcome applicants from all backgrounds and are committed to providing equal opportunities. Should you require any accommodations during the recruitment process, please submit an Accommodations Request Form, and we will work together to meet your needs.
We may use AI-enabled tools to screen and assess applicants against the criteria for this position. This helps our recruiters identify potentially qualified candidates, but it doesn't limit the applications our recruiters may review or consider.
Beware of Scams: Cohere will never ask for payment or third-party services (e.g., CV writing) as part of our hiring process. All legitimate roles are listed on the Cohere careers page and LinkedIn only, with all communications from Cohere employees coming from an @cohere.com or @cw.cohere email alias. If jobs are viewed on other sites then please verify these through our official careers page.
🎯 Who is this job for?
This role is suitable for a Middle-level Web Developer with at least two years of experience delivering production React and TypeScript applications.
The candidate should be skilled in Next.js, Tailwind CSS, responsive UI development, performance optimization, and ideally a headless CMS such as Sanity, with strong collaboration skills across engineering, design, and marketing.
They should be familiar with building polished, growth-focused websites, content-driven pages, CMS schemas and workflows, marketing experiments, and maintainable code using AI-assisted development tools.
💬 Potential Interview Questions
How would you structure a content-driven page in Next.js using TypeScript and Sanity?
I would model reusable content blocks in Sanity, query them with typed GROQ queries, and render them through a component-based page builder in Next.js. I would also validate content boundaries and provide sensible fallbacks for missing or unpublished fields.
How would you optimize the performance of a marketing site built with Next.js?
I would measure real-user and lab metrics first, then optimize the highest-impact issues using image optimization, appropriate server or static rendering, code splitting, caching, and minimized client-side JavaScript. I would verify improvements with tools such as Lighthouse and production monitoring.
What are the advantages of using a headless CMS such as Sanity?
A headless CMS separates content management from presentation, allowing editors to update content while developers maintain a flexible frontend. Sanity also supports structured schemas, reusable content, previews, and custom editorial workflows.
How would you design Sanity schemas to make publishing easier for content editors?
I would use clear field names, useful descriptions, sensible defaults, validation rules, and reusable object types. I would keep schemas flexible enough for marketing needs while preventing invalid combinations that could break the frontend.
How would you implement responsive, polished UI with Tailwind CSS?
I would establish consistent design tokens and reusable component patterns, then use Tailwind’s responsive utilities for layout and spacing across breakpoints. I would validate the result against design specifications and test keyboard, touch, and screen-reader interactions.
How do you decide whether a component should be server-rendered or client-rendered in Next.js?
I would prefer server rendering for static or content-focused UI to reduce browser JavaScript and improve initial performance. I would use client components only where interactivity, browser APIs, local state, or event handlers require them.
How would you safely ship an experiment or marketing feature?
I would define the success metric, isolate the experiment behind a feature flag or controlled rollout, and ensure both variants are accessible and performant. I would monitor errors, conversion data, and user behavior before deciding whether to expand or remove it.
What TypeScript practices help maintain reliability in a content-heavy application?
I would use strict compiler settings, explicit types for CMS responses, discriminated unions for block types, and runtime validation at external data boundaries. This prevents assumptions about editor-managed content from becoming production errors.
How would you debug a production issue on a Next.js website?
I would reproduce the issue, inspect logs and monitoring data, and identify whether it originates in rendering, data fetching, deployment, or the browser. I would make the smallest safe fix, add regression coverage where appropriate, and verify the deployment through staged or gradual rollout.
How can AI coding tools be used effectively while maintaining code quality?
I would use them to accelerate exploration, boilerplate, and refactoring, but review every change for correctness, security, accessibility, performance, and consistency with the codebase. I would run tests and linting and remain able to explain and maintain anything I merge.
