🎯 Who is this job for?

This role is suitable for a Senior Frontend Software Engineer with extensive experience building scalable, production-grade web applications for high-traffic consumer products.

Required skills include strong JavaScript, TypeScript, React, and Next.js expertise; responsive UI implementation; API and system design using REST, GraphQL, gRPC, HTTP, or Thrift; testing, performance optimization, experimentation, and deployment.

The candidate should be familiar with leading full-lifecycle development, translating complex designs into user-focused features, collaborating cross-functionally, conducting code and design reviews, establishing engineering best practices, and mentoring junior and mid-level engineers.

💬 Potential Interview Questions

How would you architect a Reddit feed in React and Next.js to support personalized content, server-side rendering, and high traffic?

I would use Next.js server rendering or streaming for the initial feed, with client-side hydration and incremental fetching for subsequent pages. The architecture should separate feed composition from presentation, support caching at appropriate layers, and use stable pagination such as cursor-based pagination to avoid duplicates during updates.

How would you optimize Core Web Vitals for a media-heavy Reddit experience?

I would prioritize reducing Largest Contentful Paint through image optimization, responsive media sizing, CDN caching, and streaming server-rendered content. I would also minimize JavaScript for Interaction to Next Paint and prevent Cumulative Layout Shift by reserving space for images, ads, and dynamically loaded components.

How would you design a GraphQL API for a feed containing posts, comments, votes, and user metadata?

I would define focused types and queries with cursor-based pagination, field-level authorization, and limits on query depth and complexity. Batching and caching, such as DataLoader-style request deduplication, would prevent N+1 queries while allowing clients to request only the fields needed by each view.

What strategies would you use to manage server state and client state in a complex React application?

I would keep server state in a data-fetching layer that handles caching, retries, invalidation, and optimistic updates, while using local React state for transient UI concerns. Global state should be reserved for cross-cutting client concerns such as authentication context, feature flags, or persistent preferences.

How would you implement optimistic voting while maintaining consistency with the backend?

I would immediately update the displayed vote state and score, then send an idempotent mutation containing the expected version or current state. On failure or conflict, the client would roll back or reconcile with the authoritative response, while retry behavior would avoid creating duplicate votes.

How would you design a scalable REST or GraphQL API for notifications and real-time engagement?

I would use paginated APIs for historical notifications and a push mechanism such as WebSockets or server-sent events for new events when appropriate. Events should be authenticated, authorized, deduplicated, and delivered through a durable backend pipeline so temporary client disconnections do not cause data loss.

How would you prevent unnecessary re-renders in a large React application?

I would profile first, then reduce broad context updates, stabilize props, split components by update frequency, and use memoization selectively. Virtualizing long lists, colocating state, and avoiding expensive calculations during render are usually more effective than applying memoization everywhere.

How would you approach experimentation and feature flags for a new consumer-facing feature?

I would assign users to stable experiment cohorts, evaluate eligibility consistently across server and client boundaries, and keep treatment logic isolated behind a typed feature-flag interface. I would define success, guardrail, and performance metrics before launch and ensure the experiment can be safely disabled without a redeployment.

How would you secure authentication and account-related frontend flows?

I would use secure, short-lived session mechanisms with appropriate cookie flags such as HttpOnly, Secure, and SameSite, while avoiding sensitive tokens in local storage. The frontend must handle expiration and renewal safely, enforce authorization through backend checks, and protect state-changing requests against CSRF and common injection risks.

How would you structure testing for a production-grade Next.js feature?

I would combine unit tests for transformations and hooks, component tests for user interactions and accessibility, integration tests for API boundaries, and end-to-end tests for critical journeys such as onboarding or posting. Tests should cover loading, error, permission, responsive, and experiment variants, with performance and observability checks included in deployment validation.
