Job Description

Help build the open future of digital intelligence

At InnoCraft (trading as Matomo), we believe everyone has the right to data sovereignty, privacy and trusted analytics insights.

Born from open source and backed by a global community, Matomo helps organisations understand their users and digital performance without surrendering ownership, privacy or control of their data.

Today, Matomo is used on more than one million websites across 190 countries, supporting leading brands, national governments, universities and organisations in regulated industries.

We are looking for a Product Engineer to help organisations make sense of their digital performance as AI changes how people discover and interact with them. You’ll help decide which problems matter most, shape solutions and deliver software that gives customers clearer insights while protecting their privacy and ownership of their data. Working closely with Product and your engineering team, you’ll have the trust and responsibility to take ideas through to measurable customer outcomes .

This is an opportunity to take real ownership, solve challenging product and platform problems, and see your work make a difference in a widely used open-source product.

Why this role matters

Customers need confidence in their data, a clear understanding of their users and tools that help them act on what they learn. As digital behaviour changes, Matomo needs to meet those needs while remaining accessible to smaller organisations and capable enough for demanding enterprise use.

Our Product Engineering teams focus on five domains: Measurement Integrity, Human Analytics, AI Analytics & Digital Presence, Growth & Web, and Enterprise Platform . You’ll work within one of these domains, collaborating across teams where customer problems and technical decisions overlap.

You’ll build new capabilities and improve a mature, widely used product. That means understanding existing systems, choosing practical solutions and evolving Matomo with care for the customers, open-source users, integrations and plugins that depend on it.]

Your work will directly influence:

  • The accuracy and trustworthiness of the data customers use to make decisions.

  • How clearly customers understand human behaviour and their digital presence as AI changes how people discover and interact with them.

  • How easily customers get started, find value and grow their use of Matomo.

  • How effectively enterprise customers manage access, governance and integrations at scale.

We make extensive use of approved AI tools throughout our engineering workflow, from exploring ideas and prototyping to building, reviewing and testing software. We expect you to use them to move faster and improve quality, while applying your own judgement and taking responsibility for the decisions you make and the software you ship.

What you’ll own

  • Understand the problem. Work with Product, colleagues and customers to uncover needs, question assumptions and agree what a useful outcome looks like.

  • Shape the solution. Explore options, test ideas through prototypes and make clear trade-offs about scope, complexity and what to deliver first.

  • Build across the stack. Own the technical design and implementation, choosing practical solutions that fit the product and its existing systems.

  • Build quality in from the start. Work with QA and Design as needed, considering privacy, security, accessibility, performance and compatibility throughout delivery.

  • Deliver and learn. Ship in small increments, take responsibility for how your changes work in production, and use customer feedback and evidence to measure results and improve them.

  • Use AI effectively throughout delivery. Give tools the context they need, challenge their suggestions and verify the results. Keep privacy, security and maintainability central to the work you ship.

What you bring

  • 5+ years experience delivering full-stack software, with the technical depth to investigate difficult problems and make sound design decisions.

  • Product judgement and a drive to solve real customer problems. You can explain why a change is worth building and care whether people use and benefit from it.

  • Confidence taking ownership of outcomes, clarifying problems and shaping solutions without needing every requirement spelled out in a ticket.

  • Confidence working in mature systems, understanding existing behaviour and improving it without unnecessary rewrites.

  • The ability to balance delivery speed with quality, privacy, security and backwards compatibility.

  • Strong experience using AI throughout development: refining requirements, preparing clear context for prompts, building and testing solutions, and checking the results. You keep reusable AI skills and instructions up to date, follow developments in models and tools, and experiment with new ways to improve delivery and quality.

  • Strong written and spoken English, with the ability to communicate clearly in a global, asynchronous environment

  • A strong record of taking ownership, exercising sound judgement and delivering measurable outcomes

Helpful experience

  • You are happy working wherever the problem takes you: frontend, backend, databases, APIs, product flows, documentation, or customer feedback.

  • Our stack includes PHP, MySQL, JavaScript, Vue.js, and TypeScript. Exact stack experience is useful, but not required. We care more about your ability to learn, reason, ship, and solve meaningful problems.

  • Experience in product management, UI/UX design or building your own product or business.

  • Contributing to or maintaining open-source projects, or building plugins, APIs and integrations used across different environments.

  • Analytics, data-intensive systems or enterprise software.

You may not match every item, but you should bring strong capability in the core requirements and a clear record of creating meaningful impact.

Why Matomo?

Matomo is for people who want their work to matter.

You will help build technology that protects data privacy, strengthens digital sovereignty and gives organisations a genuine alternative to surveillance-based platforms.

We are intentionally lean, globally distributed and backed by a worldwide open-source community. Important work is not buried under layers. You will have access to meaningful problems, the context behind decisions and the opportunity to influence what Matomo becomes next.

We value people who take ownership, exercise strong judgement and turn complex problems into clear, valuable outcomes. People who raise standards, challenge assumptions and care about the complete result, not only their part of it.

High performance at Matomo means choosing the work that matters most, moving it forward with urgency and leaving customers, colleagues and Matomo stronger because of your contribution.

You will have freedom over where and, within the needs of your role, when you work. In return, we expect clear communication, dependable follow-through and accountability for outcomes.

We also protect focused work through:

  • No-meeting Fridays

  • No more than two days each week with late meetings

  • No meetings after 10pm in any time zone

This is a place for people who want meaningful responsibility, visible impact and the opportunity to help build something globally significant.

Benefits

  • 100% remote working within your country of employment

  • Flexible working hours, within the collaboration and coverage requirements of the role

  • 25 days of paid annual leave

  • Home-office equipment allowance

  • Health insurance support, where applicable

  • Mental-health and wellbeing support

  • Paid volunteering day

  • Pet bereavement leave

Benefits vary depending on the country of employment.

Hiring Process

Application → Screening → Online aptitude test → People & Culture interview → Hiring Manager/Behaviour interview→ Live Coding test (Final round)

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Matomo values what makes you unique. We’re an inclusive employer and welcome applicants from all backgrounds, because diverse perspectives help us build better products.

Fight for data privacy. Build the open future of digital intelligence. Create meaningful impact from anywhere.

We may use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to support parts of the hiring process, such as reviewing applications, analyzing resumes, or assessing responses and identifying potential inconsistencies or verification signals in application materials based on available information. These tools assist our recruitment team but do not replace human judgment. Final hiring decisions are ultimately made by humans. If you would like more information about how your data is processed, please contact us.

๐ŸŽฏ Who is this job for?

This role is suitable for a Senior Full Stack Product Engineer with at least five years of experience delivering software and owning measurable customer outcomes.

The candidate should have strong full-stack development, system design, debugging, product judgement, AI-assisted development, communication, and experience balancing quality, privacy, security, performance, and backward compatibility.

They should be familiar with shaping solutions from ambiguous problems, working in mature systems, building frontend and backend features, APIs, databases, integrations, prototypes, tests, documentation, and iterative production improvements.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Potential Interview Questions

How would you design a privacy-preserving web analytics tracking system?

I would minimise collected data, avoid unnecessary identifiers, support consent controls, and anonymise or aggregate data as early as practical. I would also ensure configurable retention, clear documentation, secure transport, and compliance with applicable privacy requirements.

How would you investigate inaccurate analytics data reported by customers?

I would reproduce the issue, compare raw events with processed reports, and trace the data through collection, validation, storage, and aggregation. I would check recent deployments, time zones, deduplication, browser behaviour, and integrations before adding targeted tests and monitoring.

How would you optimise a slow MySQL query used in an analytics report?

I would inspect the execution plan, identify expensive joins, filters, scans, and sorting, then validate suitable indexes and query changes with realistic data. For large datasets, I would also consider partitioning, pre-aggregation, caching, or asynchronous report generation.

What design considerations are important when adding a Vue.js and TypeScript feature to a mature product?

I would follow existing component and state-management patterns, define clear TypeScript interfaces, and preserve accessibility, responsive behaviour, and backward compatibility. I would add unit and integration tests and deliver the feature incrementally behind suitable configuration if necessary.

How would you design a PHP API for an enterprise analytics integration?

I would define explicit resource contracts, validation rules, authentication and authorisation requirements, pagination, rate limits, and consistent error responses. The API should be versioned carefully, observable in production, and compatible with existing plugins and clients.

How do you protect analytics data and APIs from security threats?

I would enforce least-privilege access, validate and sanitise inputs, use parameterised queries, protect against CSRF where applicable, and secure secrets and transport. I would also include threat modelling, dependency updates, audit logging, abuse controls, and security-focused automated tests.

How would you improve performance in a data-intensive full-stack application?

I would measure first using browser, application, database, and production telemetry to locate the dominant bottleneck. Improvements might include reducing payloads, lazy loading, caching, query optimisation, background processing, and incremental rendering, followed by validation against meaningful user metrics.

How would you safely change behaviour in an open-source product with many plugins and integrations?

I would identify public APIs, extension points, database assumptions, and documented or de facto compatibility requirements before making the change. I would preserve existing contracts where possible, provide migration guidance, add regression coverage, and communicate deprecations clearly.

How would you use AI tools during software development while maintaining quality and privacy?

I would provide focused, non-sensitive context, use AI for exploration, implementation, testing, and review, and treat its output as an untrusted suggestion. I would verify correctness through tests, security and privacy review, maintainability checks, and human ownership of the final decision.

How would you decide which product improvement to build first when requirements are ambiguous?

I would clarify the customer problem, desired outcome, evidence of impact, constraints, and success metrics with Product and relevant stakeholders. I would compare options by customer value, risk, effort, and reversibility, then deliver the smallest measurable increment and learn from its results.
