Role Overview

We are looking for a versatile and highly skilled Forward Deployed Engineer to join our team. In this role, you will combine strong technical abilities with excellent communication skills, working directly with customers to ensure they maximize the value of HappyRobot’s AI platform. You will be involved in onboarding, implementation, and ongoing support, while also contributing to product development and innovation.

What You’ll Do

Customer-Facing Engineering – Work closely with customers from onboarding to ongoing usage, helping them integrate and optimize our AI solutions.
Technical Development – Build new features, MVPs, and scalable solutions that directly impact customer outcomes.
Full-Stack Development – Utilize React, TypeScript, Node.js, and Python to develop robust applications and tools.
AI/ML Applications – Design, implement, and iterate on AI/ML solutions, including LLM prompting, tuning of voices, and transcribers to optimize use cases.
Integration & APIs – Manage APIs and integrations with third-party systems to ensure seamless functionality for customers.
Cross-Functional Collaboration – Partner with Product, Engineering, and Customer Success teams to deliver tailored solutions.
Iterative Problem-Solving – Continuously iterate and improve AI solutions based on customer feedback and evolving requirements.
Project Management – Prioritize and manage multiple projects under tight deadlines while maintaining high-quality results.

Must Have

Strong full-stack experience: React, TypeScript, Node.js.
Hands-on proficiency in Python.
Experience building AI/ML applications, including LLM prompting and tuning.
Ability to manage APIs and integrate with third-party systems.
Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
Proven ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects under tight deadlines.

🎯 Who is this job for?

This role is suitable for a Middle to Senior-level engineer with strong full-stack expertise in React, TypeScript, Node.js, and Python, plus practical experience building AI/ML applications and working with LLMs.

The ideal candidate should be skilled in API development, third-party integrations, AI prompting and voice or transcription optimization, and communicating technical concepts clearly to non-technical customers.

They should be comfortable handling customer onboarding, implementation, troubleshooting, feature and MVP development, cross-functional collaboration, and multiple fast-moving projects with strong ownership and independence.

💬 Potential Interview Questions

How would you design a full-stack customer solution using React, TypeScript, Node.js, and Python?

I would use React and TypeScript for a typed, maintainable user interface, Node.js for APIs and orchestration, and Python for AI or data-processing services. I would define clear service boundaries, validate inputs at each layer, and add observability and automated tests from the beginning.

How would you integrate HappyRobot with a customer’s third-party systems?

I would first document the external API contract, authentication method, data mappings, rate limits, and failure modes. Then I would build an isolated integration layer with retries, timeouts, idempotency, structured logging, and secure credential management.

How would you design an LLM prompt for a production voice workflow?

I would clearly define the worker’s role, objectives, constraints, tool usage, escalation rules, and expected output format. I would test the prompt against representative and adversarial examples, measure task success and failure rates, and iterate using real customer feedback.

How would you improve the accuracy of an AI voice agent?

I would analyze failures across transcription, intent recognition, prompting, business logic, and text-to-speech output rather than tuning only the model. How would you handle unreliable or ambiguous speech transcription?

I would use confidence scores and domain context to detect ambiguity, then ask concise clarification questions or confirm critical information explicitly. For high-impact actions, I would require validation before execution and log the interaction for later evaluation.

How would you build a reliable Node.js API for an AI orchestration workflow?

I would implement schema validation, authentication and authorization, request timeouts, structured errors, idempotency keys, and observability. Long-running operations should be asynchronous where appropriate, with durable state, retries, and clear status reporting.

How would you securely manage customer data and API credentials?

I would encrypt sensitive data in transit and at rest, store credentials in a secrets manager, enforce least-privilege access, and avoid exposing secrets in logs or client-side code. I would also define retention policies, audit access, and follow applicable privacy requirements such as GDPR.

How would you deploy and support a customer-specific MVP under a tight deadline?

I would reduce the scope to the smallest testable workflow, clarify success criteria, and identify risks and dependencies early. I would ship behind feature flags with monitoring and rollback capability, validate it with the customer, and then harden the most valuable parts.

I would define measurable metrics such as task completion, accuracy, latency, escalation rate, cost, and customer satisfaction. I would test normal, edge, and adversarial cases, verify integration reliability and security, and establish monitoring and an incident-response plan.

How would you prioritize competing customer requests and engineering work?

I would compare requests using customer impact, urgency, strategic value, effort, technical risk, and reuse across customers. I would communicate trade-offs clearly, align stakeholders on priorities, and deliver incremental milestones rather than overcommitting to several projects at once.
