Job Description

Description

Through proprietary software and AI, along with a focus on customer delight, Sleek makes the back-office easy for micro SMEs.

We give Entrepreneurs time back to focus on what they love doing - growing their business and being with customers. With a surging number of Entrepreneurs globally, we are innovating in a highly lucrative space.

We operate 3 business segments:

Corporate Secretary: Automating the company incorporation, secretarial, filing, Nominee Director, mailroom and immigration processes via custom online robots and SleekSign. We are the market leaders in Singapore with ~5% market share of all new business incorporations

Accounting & Bookkeeping: Redefining what it means to do Accounting, Bookkeeping, Tax and Payroll thanks to our proprietary SleekBooks ledger, AI tools and exceptional customer service

FinTech payments: Overcoming a key challenge for Entrepreneurs by offering digital banking services to new businesses

Sleek launched in 2017 and now has around 17,500 customers across our offices in Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia and the UK. We have around 600 staff with an intact startup mindset.

We have recently raised Series B financing off the back of >70% compound annual growth in Revenue over the last 5 years. Sleek has been recognised by The Financial Times, The Straits Times, Forbes and LinkedIn as one of the fastest growing companies in Asia.

Backed by world-class investors, we are on track to be one of the few cash flow positive, tech-enabled unicorns based out of Asia Pacific.

At Sleek, we are on a mission to streamline operations and elevate customer experience through intelligent automation and modern engineering.

About the Role:

As a Principal Full Stack Engineer, you will be one of Sleek’s most senior individual contributors, leading the architectural vision and end-to-end delivery of complex web applications and core platform services. You'll operate with a high degree of autonomy, solving ambiguous engineering problems while helping raise the technical standards of the wider engineering organisation.

Mission:

In this role you will balance deep technical execution across the full stack—from intuitive user interfaces to scalable distributed backend systems—while championing developer productivity and embedding agentic AI workflows into our products.

Key Outcomes:
1. Full Stack Architecture & Product Delivery

Architect, build, and maintain production-grade SaaS applications across the entire stack using modern JavaScript/TypeScript, frontend frameworks (React/Vue), and backend environments (Node.js/NestJS).

Design resilient APIs, database schemas (Postgres, MongoDB), and cloud-native services capable of scaling with business growth.

Partner closely with Product, Design, and Engineering leaders to turn complex operational and financial challenges into simple, robust software solutions.

2. Agentic AI Integration

Architect and implement agentic AI capabilities and intelligent workflows into production applications (e.g., document processing, automated classification, and decision-support systems).

Establish reliability patterns for AI features, including guardrails, evaluation frameworks, fallback strategies, and observability for model behavior.

3. Harness Engineering & Engineering Productivity

Build and maintain engineering harnesses, automated workflows, and internal developer tooling that eliminate friction in the engineering lifecycle.

Introduce modern AI-assisted development tools (such as Cursor, automated test/documentation generators, and debugging aids) to significantly increase productivity across the entire engineering organization.

4. Platform Performance & Technical Leadership

Identify and eliminate performance bottlenecks in APIs, data pipelines, and backend microservices.

Mentor senior and mid-level engineers, lead technical architecture reviews, and raise the bar for code quality, testing, and system design across Sleek.

Requirements

Must-Have Requirements:

  • Depth— 8+ years shipping and running production SaaS.
  • Architecture— scalable distributed systems, APIs, and service boundaries you've had to live with.
  • TypeScript / Node.js— years in this ecosystem, not a recent port from another language. Relational and document databases both.
  • Full-stack ownership— you take a feature from schema to API to UI and out to production without handing off the parts you like least. You're strongest somewhere, but you're not helpless anywhere.
  • Developer platform— you've built internal developer tooling, automation, and paved paths that other engineers depend on daily, and treated them as products with users rather than side projects.
  • Cloud and operations— you deploy it, monitor it, respond to incidents, and continuously improve it in production. Observability and security are part of the job, not someone else's.
  • Production AI — You've built and shipped AI-powered product capabilities (agents, intelligent automation, document processing, workflow orchestration, or similar) and understand how to evaluate, monitor, and improve them in production.
  • Force multiplier— you've raised the people around you through mentoring and standards that outlast you.
  • Autonomy — You thrive in ambiguous environments, proactively identify problems worth solving, and drive technical outcomes without relying on detailed task management.

What Success Looks Like

  • You pick up ambiguous problems and come back with a direction to argue about, not just a list of questions.
  • You use AI tooling aggressively on your own work, and you're honest about where it fails.
  • You'd rather delete code than add it, and you can tell which is which.
  • You say when something is a bad idea, including when it's ours.
  • You leave the codebase and the people around you better than you found them.
  • You treat production incidents as your problem regardless of who wrote the code.

Nice-to-Have Experience

  • Our stack— NestJS, React or Vue, Postgres or MySQL, MongoDB, AWS, Kubernetes or Rancher.
  • Tooling and observability— Cursor, Claude Code, or Copilot; Grafana, Prometheus, OpenTelemetry.
  • Applied AI—agentic systems, multi-agent workflows, LLM observability, sandboxed agent execution, and AI data pipelines.
  • Context— async work in globally distributed teams; FinTech, Accounting, Compliance, or RegTech.

馃幆 Who is this job for?

Level: Senior/Principal engineer suitable for an autonomous technical leader with 8+ years of experience shipping and operating production SaaS products.

Required skills: Strong TypeScript, Node.js, React or Vue, API and distributed-system architecture, PostgreSQL or MySQL, MongoDB, cloud operations, observability, security, production AI, developer tooling, and mentoring.

Relevant tasks: Owning features end to end from database schema through backend and user interface to deployment, integrating reliable agentic AI workflows, improving platform performance and engineering productivity, leading architecture decisions, and resolving ambiguous production problems.

馃挰 Potential Interview Questions

How would you architect a scalable SaaS platform using TypeScript, NestJS, React or Vue, and AWS?

I would separate the system into clear domain boundaries, expose well-versioned APIs through NestJS, and use asynchronous processing for long-running workflows. I would deploy stateless services on AWS with centralized observability, automated CI/CD, and infrastructure designed for horizontal scaling.

How would you decide between PostgreSQL and MongoDB for a financial or compliance-related feature?

I would use PostgreSQL for transactional data requiring strong consistency, relational integrity, and reporting, such as ledgers or incorporation records. MongoDB can be appropriate for flexible document structures, but I would carefully define consistency, indexing, backup, and audit requirements before choosing it.

How would you design an API for a long-running document-processing workflow?

The API should accept the request, persist a workflow record, and return an identifier immediately rather than blocking the client. A queue and worker service would process the document asynchronously, while clients receive status updates through polling, webhooks, or WebSockets, with retries and idempotency built in.

What reliability patterns would you apply when integrating an AI agent into a production workflow?

I would use strict input and output schemas, bounded tool permissions, timeouts, retries, human approval for high-risk actions, and deterministic fallback paths. The system should also record prompts, model versions, tool calls, outcomes, latency, cost, and failures for evaluation and operational monitoring.

How would you evaluate an AI-powered document classification or decision-support feature?

I would create a representative, versioned evaluation set with human-validated labels and measure precision, recall, false-positive cost, latency, and abstention quality. Offline evaluations should be combined with production monitoring, sampled human review, and regression tests run whenever prompts, models, or workflow logic change.

How would you investigate and resolve a performance bottleneck in a Node.js backend?

I would first use traces, metrics, profiling, and database query analysis to identify whether the bottleneck is CPU, I/O, network, or database related. Typical fixes include improving indexes and query plans, removing N+1 access patterns, caching stable data, moving work to queues, and validating the improvement with load tests.

What observability strategy would you implement for distributed services?

I would use OpenTelemetry for correlated traces, structured logs, and metrics, with dashboards and alerts in tools such as Prometheus and Grafana. Service-level indicators should cover availability, latency, error rates, queue health, database performance, and important business outcomes, not just infrastructure utilization.

How would you design an internal developer platform that improves engineering productivity?

I would treat internal tooling as a product: identify developer pain points, provide paved paths for service creation, testing, deployment, observability, and documentation, and measure adoption and delivery improvements. The platform should offer safe defaults while allowing teams to escape the path when justified.

How would you secure and operate a full-stack application running on Kubernetes or Rancher?

I would use least-privilege identities, secret management, network policies, container image scanning, dependency controls, and secure defaults in both application and cluster configuration. Production operation would include automated deployments, health checks, resource limits, backups, incident runbooks, and regular recovery testing.

How do you approach architectural decisions and technical leadership in an ambiguous environment?

I would clarify the desired business outcome, document key constraints and trade-offs, and propose a direction that can be reviewed and validated incrementally. I would favor simple designs with reversible decisions, involve relevant engineers early, and reinforce quality through mentoring, design reviews, testing standards, and ownership of production results.
