Job Description

About Us

Beast Industries is a multifaceted media and entertainment company founded by Jimmy Donaldson, popularly known as MrBeast, the most watched person in the world. Renowned for revolutionizing digital content creation, Beast Industries encompasses a diverse portfolio of ventures that extend far beyond its origins on YouTube. With a mission to entertain, inspire, and create significant social impact, Beast Industries operates across various domains including digital media, philanthropy, consumer products, and innovative business initiatives. At Beast Industries, we believe in the transformative power of digital media and its potential to entertain, educate, and effect positive change. Our commitment to innovation, creativity, and philanthropy drives us to explore new frontiers, create unforgettable experiences, and build a legacy that inspires future generations.

The Opportunity

We're doing an AI-first engineering rebuild for a company that already has an audience of 100M+ people. This is a zero-to-one build with no legacy constraints. You're not joining to maintain someone else's code. You're here to build live streaming and gaming experiences that set a new bar for the industry, from the ground up for the Beast community. You'll work across the full stack, frontend and backend, to deliver features at a speed that wasn't possible before AI, and help shape a product that millions of users will experience in real time.

The Product

You'll be working, as part of a small and fast-moving team, on one of the most technically demanding parts of the product: a live and game stack where traffic is unpredictable and user expectations are unforgiving. Workloads are bursty and correlated: fan-out events drive synchronized connection storms that stress-test every layer of the stack, from load balancers to live streaming service to stateful game servers to database write throughput. That means:

  • Real-time features (video playback, messaging, leaderboards, in-game interactions) that must stay correct and fast under spike-driven load.
  • A client experience that needs to feel seamless across devices, network conditions, and concurrent user spikes.
  • Code that lives in production and gets stress-tested every time a creator moment drives a traffic surge.

What You'll Do

  • Build and ship live and game features across the full stack using AI coding tools, contributing to a velocity that redefines what a small engineering team can deliver.
  • Take ownership of your features end to end, from development through deployment, using AI-facilitated QA processes and tooling to maintain high engineering quality.
  • Write clean, reliable, and performant code with a strong sense of accountability for what you ship in production.
  • Collaborate closely with your teammates, contributing to a culture of high standards, fast iteration, and continuous learning.

Who You Are

  • AI-Native: You're already burning through tokens and using AI coding agents daily to move faster.
  • Full Stack Engineer: 3+ years of hands-on experience building consumer-facing products across frontend and backend, with comfort moving between client and server as the product demands.
  • Real-Time Enthusiast: You have genuine interest or experience in live streaming, gaming, or real-time systems. You understand why latency matters and you care about the user experience under load.
  • Ownership Mindset: You take pride in what you ship, follow through on production issues, and don't consider a feature done until it's running reliably in the hands of users.

Strong software engineering fundamentals with hands-on experience in at least one backend language (Node.js, Go, Java, Rust, or equivalent) and one frontend framework. Bonus points for experience with live streaming protocols (HLS, RTMP), real-time systems (websockets, messaging, leaderboards), gaming backend services, or prior work at a consumer-scale company.
Location: Bay Area -  Reporting To: Director of Software Engineering: $178,000 –$223,000 base + equity + benefits

Benefits

The Perks, Why Work On the MrBeast Team

We are redefining what entertainment and storytelling look like at global scale. Every piece of content we publish reaches millions and influences culture in real time. This is your opportunity to lead the team that decides how those moments come to life across every screen.

  • Competitive Salary
  • Generous Medical (Blue Cross Blue Shield), Dental, Vision and company-paid Life Insurance
  • Company contributions to employee Health Savings Accounts (HSA)
  • 401k Plan with Safe Harbor company-matching
  • Flexible vacation policy and paid company holidays
  • Company-provided technology package
  • Relocation assistance where applicable, including travel and company-provided housing for the first 90 days

🎯 Who is this job for?

Level: Middle-level Full Stack Engineer with at least 3 years of experience building consumer-facing products across frontend and backend systems.

Required skills: Proficiency in one backend language such as Node.js, Go, Java, or Rust, one frontend framework, AI coding tools, strong software engineering fundamentals, and an understanding of performance, reliability, and latency.

Relevant experience: The ideal candidate should be familiar with owning features end to end, deploying and supporting production systems, and building real-time experiences such as live streaming, messaging, leaderboards, gaming services, or WebSocket-based interactions under unpredictable, high-volume traffic.

💬 Potential Interview Questions

How would you design a real-time architecture for messaging, leaderboards, and in-game interactions during a sudden traffic spike?

I would use horizontally scalable stateless services, WebSockets or a managed pub/sub layer for delivery, and partitioned state stores for leaderboards and game data. I would also add rate limiting, backpressure, connection draining, and autoscaling based on active connections and event throughput.

What are the main differences between HLS and RTMP, and how would you use them in a live streaming product?

RTMP is commonly used for ingesting live video from an encoder, while HLS is typically used to distribute video to viewers through HTTP-based delivery and CDNs. I would use RTMP or a similar protocol for ingest, then transcode and package the stream into HLS, potentially using low-latency HLS when interactive latency is important.

How would you reduce video playback latency while maintaining reliability across different devices and network conditions?

I would use adaptive bitrate streaming, short segments, low-latency HLS where supported, and CDN edge delivery. The client should monitor buffer health and bandwidth, switch renditions smoothly, recover from stalled segments, and fall back to more compatible playback modes when necessary.

How would you scale WebSocket connections during a synchronized audience surge?

I would distribute connections across load-balanced WebSocket gateways and avoid storing connection state only in one process. Shared presence and pub/sub infrastructure would allow messages to reach users regardless of gateway placement, while connection limits, heartbeats, admission control, and graceful degradation would protect the system during overload.

How would you implement a highly scalable leaderboard with frequent score updates?

I would partition leaderboards by game, region, or event and use an in-memory sorted data structure such as Redis sorted sets for fast ranking operations. Durable persistence could be handled asynchronously through an event stream, with idempotent consumers and periodic snapshots to recover from failures.

How would you ensure game state remains correct when clients experience latency, retries, or duplicate requests?

The server should be authoritative and validate every state-changing action rather than trusting the client. Requests should include unique operation IDs or sequence numbers, and state transitions should be atomic and idempotent so retries cannot apply the same action multiple times.

What strategies would you use to protect backend services and databases from correlated write spikes?

I would buffer noncritical writes through a durable queue or event stream, batch updates where possible, and separate transactional data from derived analytics. I would also use caching, database partitioning, connection pooling, rate limits, circuit breakers, and load tests that model synchronized traffic rather than only steady-state volume.

How would you design a frontend that remains responsive during real-time updates and high event volume?

I would keep rendering work bounded by batching updates, throttling nonessential UI changes, virtualizing large lists, and updating only affected components. The client should also handle reconnects, stale events, offline states, and graceful degradation when real-time updates become too expensive.

How would you test a live feature before deploying it to millions of users?

I would combine unit and integration tests with contract tests, browser tests, protocol-level tests, and load tests that simulate connection storms and bursty event fan-out. I would deploy progressively with feature flags, synthetic monitoring, dashboards, automated rollback criteria, and production-like failure testing.

How do you use AI coding tools while maintaining code quality and production accountability?

I use AI to accelerate exploration, implementation, test generation, and debugging, but I remain responsible for reviewing its output and validating assumptions. I would require strong typing, focused tests, security checks, observability, code review, and staged deployment before considering an AI-assisted feature production-ready.
