Job Description

About Us

Founded in 2011, Modus is a global, fully remote team of world-class technologists who thrive in a collaborative, innovative environment. We’re a digital product engineering partner for forward-thinking businesses. Our global teams work side-by-side with clients to design, build, and scale custom solutions that achieve real results and lasting change, partnering with industry leaders including AWS, GitHub, and Atlassian.

We were fully remote before it was cool! Recognized as one of the Inc. 5000 Fastest Growing Private Companies for nine years and a top remote work company by FlexJobs, we have helped some of the world’s largest brands deliver powerful digital experiences.

As an award-winning Atlassian partner with a world-class team, we help organizations innovate and solve complex challenges for Fortune 500 companies and beyond, we want to hear from you.

Opportunity!

We are looking for Full-Stack Software Engineers with strong experience building and maintaining cloud-native applications using AWS, Python, and TypeScript.

While this is a full-stack role, the primary focus is on backend and AWS serverless application development, with frontend work as part of end-to-end feature delivery. You’ll build and evolve application functionality, develop APIs and integrations, work with serverless AWS services, and contribute to frontend experiences using React or Angular when needed.

You’ll also work in an AI-assisted development environment, using modern coding tools to accelerate development, navigate existing codebases, improve testing, and deliver high-quality software more efficiently.

This role is ideal for a well-rounded software engineer who enjoys owning features across the stack but has particularly strong backend and cloud engineering fundamentals.

The opportunity is open to engineers located in the United States or LATAM.

Requirements:

  • Strong professional experience in full-stack software engineering, with a heavier emphasis on backend development.
  • Strong proficiency with Python and TypeScript in production application environments.
  • Hands-on experience building and maintaining applications on AWS.
  • Strong experience with AWS serverless architectures and services.
  • Experience designing, building, and integrating backend services and APIs.
  • Strong understanding of cloud-native application architecture, asynchronous processing, integrations, and distributed application patterns.
  • Experience building production software using modern engineering practices, including automated testing, code reviews, CI/CD, and source control.
  • Experience with React and/or Angular and the ability to contribute effectively to frontend application development when required.
  • Experience working across existing codebases and independently understanding application architecture, dependencies, and business logic.
  • Hands-on experience using AI-assisted software development tools to support coding, debugging, testing, refactoring, or codebase exploration.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to take ownership of application features from implementation through deployment.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills within distributed, cross-functional engineering teams.

Bonus points:

  • Deep experience with AWS serverless technologies such as Lambda, API Gateway, EventBridge, SQS, SNS, Step Functions, or DynamoDB.
  • Experience designing event-driven and asynchronous architectures on AWS.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code using Terraform, AWS CDK, CloudFormation, or similar tooling.
  • Experience with containerized workloads using Docker and AWS services such as ECS or EKS.
  • Experience implementing application monitoring, logging, and observability in AWS environments.
  • Experience using Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or similar agentic/AI-assisted development tools as part of daily engineering workflows.
  • Experience working across both new development and existing application modernization.
  • AWS certifications or demonstrated depth across the AWS ecosystem.

You’ll Love:

  • Building real application functionality using Python, TypeScript, and AWS.
  • Working primarily on backend and serverless engineering while still having the opportunity to contribute across the full stack.
  • Designing and building cloud-native and event-driven applications.
  • Owning features from backend implementation through frontend integration and production deployment.
  • Using AI-assisted development tools to accelerate delivery, testing, debugging, and technical discovery.
  • Working with modern AWS services rather than maintaining traditional infrastructure-heavy applications.
  • Collaborating with experienced engineers in a distributed, fully remote environment.
  • Solving practical engineering problems and seeing your work directly impact production applications.

By joining our team, you’ll be part of a winning squad that plays to each other’s strengths and celebrates every success together.

🎯 Who is this job for?

This role is best suited for a Senior-level full-stack software engineer with strong backend and cloud-native development experience. Required skills include professional proficiency in Python, TypeScript, AWS serverless services, APIs, distributed systems, React or Angular, automated testing, CI/CD, and AI-assisted development tools. The candidate should be familiar with owning features end to end, designing event-driven integrations, working in existing codebases, building frontend experiences, and deploying and maintaining production applications.

💬 Potential Interview Questions

How would you design a serverless backend on AWS using Python and TypeScript?

I would use API Gateway with Python-based Lambda functions for synchronous APIs and TypeScript where appropriate for application or infrastructure code. I would select services such as DynamoDB, SQS, EventBridge, and Step Functions based on consistency, workflow, and asynchronous processing requirements.

What are the main considerations when designing AWS Lambda functions for production?

Important considerations include idempotency, timeout and memory configuration, cold starts, dependency packaging, concurrency limits, retries, and least-privilege IAM permissions. I would also implement structured logging, metrics, tracing, and automated tests.

How would you design an event-driven workflow using EventBridge and SQS?

EventBridge can route domain events to consumers, while SQS provides durable buffering and controlled asynchronous processing. Consumers should be idempotent, use visibility timeouts and dead-letter queues, and handle retries without creating duplicate side effects.

How do you design and secure APIs built with API Gateway and Lambda?

I would define clear resource models, validation, consistent error responses, pagination, and versioning where needed. Security would include authentication and authorization, input validation, throttling, encryption, least-privilege IAM, and protection against excessive payloads or abuse.

When would you choose DynamoDB over a relational database?

DynamoDB is a strong choice for highly scalable, low-latency access patterns with predictable query requirements and serverless workloads. I would model tables around access patterns, carefully select partition keys, and use transactions or conditional writes when atomicity is required.

How would you ensure reliability and idempotency in distributed AWS applications?

I would use idempotency keys, conditional writes, deduplication records, and deterministic processing for retried requests or events. Timeouts, exponential backoff, dead-letter queues, circuit breakers, and clear failure handling would help contain partial failures.

How do you structure automated testing for a Python and TypeScript full-stack application?

I would combine unit tests for business logic, integration tests for AWS adapters and APIs, contract tests for service boundaries, and end-to-end tests for critical user flows. Tests should run in CI with coverage and quality checks while avoiding excessive dependence on live cloud resources.

How would you implement CI/CD and Infrastructure as Code for AWS serverless services?

I would define infrastructure using Terraform, AWS CDK, or CloudFormation and manage it through version control with reviewed pull requests. The pipeline would run linting, tests, security checks, packaging, staged deployments, and rollback or safe-release strategies such as aliases or canary deployments.

How do you approach contributing to a React or Angular frontend when your primary focus is backend development?

I first understand the component structure, state management, routing, and API integration patterns already used by the application. I then implement focused, typed changes with reusable components, appropriate loading and error states, and tests that verify the user-facing behavior.

How do you use AI-assisted development tools safely in an existing codebase?

I use them to explore unfamiliar code, generate drafts, suggest tests, and assist with refactoring, but I verify every result against requirements and existing architectural conventions. Sensitive data should not be exposed, and generated code must pass review, automated tests, security checks, and normal engineering standards.
