Job Description
Lead Front-end Developer - E-commerce
Remote
iFIT’s vision is to create the world's most holistic health and fitness platform, integrating all elements of health - physical fitness, mental health, nutrition and active recovery - into a seamless interactive experience. We develop proprietary software that learns and adjusts to the habits of each person as it delivers immersive content that guides them on their own individual fitness journey.
We are currently seeking an ambitious pace-setter to join our team as a Lead Front-End Developer, E-Commerce remotely in the US.
iFIT is looking for an experienced Lead Front-End Developer to drive our web application architecture and lead a high-performing remote team. You will oversee front-end delivery across our web properties, with NordicTrack.com as your primary focus. In this role, you will lead the team building our e-commerce web applications on Next.js, working closely with UI/UX designers, back-end developers, QA, and product to deliver fast, accessible, and responsive experiences — while shaping architecture, mentoring developers, and driving A/B testing. You will report to the Senior Director of Software Engineering and manage a team of three direct reports.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Drive the design and implementation of efficient, scalable, dynamic, and maintainable front-end solutions using Next.js.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including UI/UX designers, back-end developers, QA, and product managers to ensure seamless integration of dynamic front-end React components.
- Lead and mentor the front-end development team, fostering a collaborative and innovative work environment and supporting each developer’s professional growth; run training sessions and workshops on Next.js and other front-end best practices.
- Set and enforce coding standards, best practices, and code reviews to maintain high code quality.
- Leverage GraphQL for efficient data fetching and manipulation of API data from composable e-commerce and headless CMS platforms.
- Own front-end accessibility (WCAG 2.1 Level AA) and Core Web Vitals performance across our e-commerce sites.
- Stay abreast of industry trends, best practices, and emerging technologies to drive continuous improvement in front-end development processes.
- Contribute to project planning, resource allocation, and sprint reviews.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
Education and Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science plus 4 years, or 8+ years of professional front-end development experience.
- Strong proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript/TypeScript, and React, with hands-on Next.js experience.
- 3+ years leading or mentoring front-end developers.
- Experience with GraphQL and with headless CMS or composable e-commerce platforms.
- Experience implementing and analyzing A/B tests for web applications.
- Authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.
Preferred Qualifications
- Solid understanding of responsive design and cross-browser compatibility.
- Experience with Vercel or Netlify.
- Experience with Git and build tools such as Webpack/Vite and npm.
- Knowledge of WCAG 2.1 Level AA, Core Web Vitals (LCP, INP, CLS), and image and video optimization.
- Experience with Figma or similar design tools.
- Familiarity with Agile methodologies.
- Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Experience with AI-assisted development tools.

🎯 Who is this job for?
This role is suitable for a Senior-level Lead Front-end Developer with 8+ years of front-end experience or a relevant degree plus experience, including at least 3 years leading or mentoring developers. The candidate should be skilled in HTML, CSS, JavaScript/TypeScript, React, Next.js, GraphQL, headless CMS or composable e-commerce platforms, accessibility, responsive design, Core Web Vitals, A/B testing, Git, and modern build or deployment tools. They should be familiar with architecting and delivering scalable e-commerce applications, leading cross-functional development, reviewing code, mentoring a remote team, improving performance and accessibility, and contributing to Agile planning and product experimentation.
💬 Potential Interview Questions
How would you structure a scalable Next.js architecture for a large e-commerce platform?
I would separate reusable UI components, domain logic, data-access layers, and page-level composition, while defining clear boundaries between server and client components. I would also establish conventions for routing, state management, error handling, testing, and observability to support multiple teams and web properties.
When would you use server-side rendering, static generation, incremental static regeneration, or client-side rendering in Next.js?
Static generation and ISR are ideal for stable catalog and content pages, while server-side rendering is useful for frequently changing or personalized data. Client-side rendering should be limited to highly interactive features that do not need to block initial page display.
How would you design efficient GraphQL data fetching for composable e-commerce and headless CMS platforms?
I would define focused queries and fragments, avoid over-fetching, and use caching, pagination, batching, and persisted queries where appropriate. I would also handle loading, partial data, errors, and schema changes consistently through a typed client and well-defined data-access layer.
What techniques would you use to improve Core Web Vitals on an e-commerce site?
I would optimize LCP through responsive image formats, prioritized critical assets, server rendering, and efficient font loading. To improve INP and CLS, I would reduce JavaScript work, split bundles, reserve layout space, avoid unnecessary re-renders, and monitor performance with real-user data.
How would you ensure WCAG 2.1 Level AA compliance in a React application?
I would use semantic HTML, keyboard-accessible interactions, visible focus states, proper labels, sufficient color contrast, meaningful alternative text, and appropriate ARIA only when necessary. Automated tools would be combined with keyboard testing, screen-reader testing, and accessibility checks during design and code review.
How would you implement and evaluate an A/B test for an e-commerce feature?
I would define a measurable hypothesis and primary success metric, then assign users consistently while minimizing performance and flicker. After validating statistical significance and segment behavior, I would review guardrail metrics such as conversion quality, revenue, accessibility, and page performance before recommending rollout.
How would you manage state in a complex Next.js shopping experience?
I would keep local UI state in components, use URL state for shareable filters and navigation, and use a dedicated client-state solution only for cross-component concerns such as cart or checkout state. Server-owned data should remain cached and synchronized through the data-fetching layer rather than duplicated unnecessarily in client state.
What would your code review and front-end quality standards include?
Reviews should evaluate correctness, maintainability, accessibility, performance, security, test coverage, and consistency with established architecture. I would support these standards with TypeScript, linting, formatting, automated tests, CI checks, documented patterns, and constructive review feedback.
How would you approach responsive design and cross-browser compatibility for an e-commerce site?
I would use a mobile-first layout system with flexible grids, responsive typography, and tested breakpoints based on content needs rather than specific devices. I would validate behavior across supported browsers using automated and real-device testing, with progressive enhancement and graceful fallbacks for unsupported features.
How would you lead and mentor a remote front-end team of three developers?
I would establish clear ownership, shared technical standards, regular one-on-ones, and lightweight written documentation to support asynchronous collaboration. I would combine pairing, workshops, architecture discussions, and actionable feedback with delivery metrics that emphasize quality and sustainable team growth.
