Payward - the parent company behind Kraken, NinjaTrader, Breakout, xStocks, Payward Services and CF Benchmarks - has spent the last 15 years building one of the most modern and globally accessible financial infrastructure platforms in the industry, built to advance an open, global financial system.
Before you apply, we encourage you to explore our culture page to understand what drives us and how we work.
The team
Founded in 2011, Kraken is one of the world's longest-standing crypto platforms, trusted by over 10 million individuals and institutions across the globe. It offers spot trading, margin, futures, staking, and OTC services, with products built for both individual investors and institutional clients.
We’re looking for a hands-on Engineering Manager to lead a cross-functional Consumer pod focused on building and scaling core Krak experiences. This leader will guide a team of Frontend (React / React Native) and Backend (Rust) engineers to deliver seamless, performant user experiences across Kraken’s primary consumer surfaces.
You’ll work closely with Product, Design, and other Engineering Managers to ensure Krak delivers exceptional UX, technical quality, and operational reliability. This role is an opportunity to shape high-impact, consumer-facing functionality used daily by a global user base.
The opportunity
-
Lead a cross-functional team of frontend and backend engineers responsible for core Krak consumer experiences.
-
Own the end-to-end UX for key Krak features across mobile and client platforms.
-
Guide the delivery of high-quality consumer applications, with a focus on usability, performance, and scale.
-
Partner with Product Managers and Designers to define and deliver high-impact features with measurable business and customer value.
-
Collaborate with other Engineering Managers and Tech Leads to maintain consistent engineering standards across services and client platforms.
-
Champion engineering excellence, maintainable architectures, and code quality.
-
Mentor engineers and foster a culture of technical growth, collaboration, and inclusivity.
-
Strengthen team organization and delivery using agile processes, project tracking, and engineering metrics (e.g., DORA, cycle time).
Skills you should HODL
-
Proven experience leading engineering teams delivering customer-facing products at scale.
-
Experience managing combined frontend and backend engineering teams.
-
Deep technical background in React Native with a solid understanding of modern frontend architectures.
-
Strong cross-functional leadership, able to align frontend and backend efforts in a complex, multi-platform environment.
-
Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
-
Empathy for the customer and a passion for building intuitive, performant consumer experiences.
-
Experience building large-scale consumer or financial products.
Nice to haves
-
Background in systems design or distributed architectures.
-
Working knowledge of Rust (or similar languages such as Go or C++), and familiarity with async architectures, APIs, and microservices.
-
Experience in the payments and card domains.
Unless a specific application deadline is stated in the job posting, applications are accepted on an ongoing basis.
Please note, applicants are permitted to redact or remove information on their resume that identifies age, date of birth, or dates of attendance at or graduation from an educational institution.

๐ฏ Who is this job for?
Senior-level engineering managers with proven experience leading cross-functional frontend and backend teams building large-scale, customer-facing consumer or financial products.
They should have strong React Native and modern frontend architecture skills, excellent stakeholder communication, and working knowledge of backend technologies such as Rust, Go, or C++.
They should be familiar with owning end-to-end mobile and client experiences, guiding scalable API and microservice development, improving performance and reliability, applying agile delivery metrics, and mentoring engineers.
๐ฌ Potential Interview Questions
How would you design a scalable React Native architecture for a consumer financial application supporting both iOS and Android?
I would use a modular architecture with clear boundaries between presentation, domain, data, and platform-specific layers. Shared business logic, typed API clients, predictable state management, and isolated native integrations would improve consistency, testability, and release velocity.
How would you improve the performance of a React Native application used by millions of consumers?
I would measure startup time, render performance, memory usage, network latency, and crash rates before optimizing. Typical improvements include reducing JavaScript work, using virtualized lists, optimizing images and animations, minimizing unnecessary renders, and monitoring performance through production telemetry.
How would you structure communication between React Native clients and Rust backend services?
I would define versioned, strongly typed API contracts with clear error semantics, authentication requirements, idempotency rules, and observability fields. The client should handle retries and degraded connectivity safely, while the backend remains authoritative for balances, orders, payments, and other financial state.
What design considerations are important when building trading or payment flows?
Correctness, security, and user clarity are critical. Flows should provide explicit confirmation, idempotent operations, accurate status transitions, strong validation, auditability, and clear handling of pending, failed, reversed, or duplicated transactions.
How would you design an asynchronous backend workflow using Rust and microservices?
I would use explicit state machines and durable events or queues for long-running operations, with idempotent consumers and correlation IDs. Timeouts, retries with backoff, dead-letter handling, and reconciliation processes are essential for reliable behavior when services or external payment providers fail.
How would you manage state consistency between a mobile client and backend services?
The backend should remain the source of truth, while the client uses carefully scoped caching and optimistic updates only where safe. Responses should include versions or timestamps, and the client must reconcile stale data, reconnect after offline periods, and never display an unverified financial result as final.
Which engineering metrics would you use to evaluate team delivery and quality?
I would track DORA metrics such as deployment frequency, lead time, change failure rate, and recovery time, alongside cycle time, escaped defects, crash-free sessions, performance indicators, and customer outcomes. Metrics should identify system constraints and improvement opportunities rather than be used to optimize individual behavior.
How would you ensure consistent engineering standards across React Native, web frontend, and Rust services?
I would establish shared expectations for design reviews, API contracts, testing, observability, security, accessibility, and release readiness. Lightweight architecture decision records, reusable tooling, cross-team reviews, and automated quality gates help maintain consistency without creating excessive process.
How would you approach testing a cross-platform financial feature?
I would combine unit tests for domain logic, component and integration tests for client behavior, contract tests for APIs, and end-to-end tests on supported devices and platforms. Critical transaction paths should also be tested for retries, timeouts, duplicate requests, interrupted sessions, authorization failures, and reconciliation scenarios.
How would you lead a team through a high-risk release affecting a global consumer audience?
I would define measurable success criteria, complete threat and failure-mode reviews, use feature flags and staged rollouts, and prepare rollback and incident procedures. After release, dashboards, alerts, customer feedback, and operational ownership should be in place to detect and resolve issues quickly.
