Job Description
About Supabase
Supabase is the Postgres development platform, built by developers for developers. We provide a complete backend solution including Database, Auth, Storage, Edge Functions, Realtime, and Vector Search. All services are deeply integrated and designed for growth.
Compute is our newly launched microVM architecture for running agentic workloads, operating alongside our existing Edge Functions service for server-side TypeScript functions distributed globally at the edge.
We want developers to be able to build truly global applications by distributing both compute and data globally. Infrastructure concerns like regions, cold starts, CPU and memory provisioning should fade into the background so developers can focus on iterating on business logic, and fast, flexible runtimes a growing range of agent-driven code.
We are looking for experienced and passionate engineers to help us go further in this vision.
What You’ll Own
-
Help build & architect the Supabase Compute platform, built on Firecracker microVMs.
-
Implementing monitoring, alerting, and OpenTelemetry tracing across the runtime, then using that visibility to drive optimizations that improve latency and reliability of the service.
-
Working closely with the Firecracker, Deno, and other open-source teams, contributing to upstream and relaying our users' requirements.
-
Participating in an on-call rotation to keep Compute healthy in production.
-
Help manage and improve features like scheduled functions, background tasks, WebSockets streaming, ephemeral file storage, and custom routing.
-
Integrating Compute more tightly with the rest of the Supabase stack — Auth, Postgres, Storage, and Realtime.
-
Expanding the Compute runtime to support more use cases (AI inference, MCP servers, hosting simple websites, URL shorteners).
-
Improving the DX of developing and debugging Compute locally through the Supabase CLI, including DevTools integration, logging, and production parity.
What You’ll Bring
-
At least 5 years of backend or systems engineering experience, with strong fluency in Rust and TypeScript.
-
Experience with Firecracker, V8 Isolates, Deno, and related runtime isolation technologies .
-
Experience operating infrastructure at scale — Kubernetes, AWS (EC2/Lambda/MicroVM), Cloudflare Workers, Redis, or comparable systems.
-
A strong vision for how compute and data can be pushed to the edge.
-
Bonus: experience building developer-facing CLIs or front-end tooling that sits on top of an infrastructure product.
What We Offer
-
Fully Remote
We hire globally. We believe you can do your best work from anywhere. There are no Supabase offices, but we provide a WeWork membership or co-working allowance you can use anywhere in the world.
-
ESOP
Every team member receives ESOP (equity ownership) in the company. We want everyone to share in the upside of what we’re building together.
-
Tech Allowance
Use this budget to set up your ideal work environment—laptop, monitor, headphones, or whatever helps you do your best work.
-
Health Benefits
Supabase covers 100% of health insurance for employees and 80% for dependents, wherever you are. Your wellbeing and your family’s health are important to us.
-
Annual Off-Sites
Once a year, the entire company gathers in a new city for a week of connection, collaboration, and fun. It’s a highlight of our year.
-
Flexible Work
We operate asynchronously and trust you to manage your own time. You know what needs to be done and when.
-
Professional Development
Every team member receives an annual education allowance to spend on learning—courses, books, conferences, or anything that supports your growth.
About the Team
Supabase was born-remote and open-source-first. We believe our globally distributed team is our secret weapon in building tools developers love.
-
~400 team members
-
60+ countries
-
20+ languages spoken
-
Over $1B raised (including our $500M Series F)
-
540,000+ community members
We move fast, build in public, and use what we ship. If it’s in your project, we probably use it in ours too. We believe deeply in the open-source ecosystem and strive to support—not replace—existing tools and communities.
๐ฏ Who is this job for?
Senior-level backend or systems engineers with at least five years of experience, strong Rust and TypeScript skills, and expertise in compute runtimes, infrastructure, and distributed systems are best suited for this role.
They should be familiar with Firecracker microVMs, V8 Isolates, Deno, Kubernetes, cloud platforms, observability, OpenTelemetry, and operating reliable infrastructure at scale.
The role involves architecting and optimizing compute platforms, building runtime features and developer tooling, integrating infrastructure with databases and services, contributing to open source, and participating in production on-call rotations.
๐ฌ Potential Interview Questions
How would you design a Firecracker-based microVM platform for securely running untrusted user workloads at global scale?
I would isolate each workload in a minimal microVM with strict resource limits, network policies, and lifecycle controls. The platform would manage image preparation, snapshotting, placement, startup, teardown, and regional failover while keeping the execution API simple for developers.
What techniques would you use to reduce cold-start latency in a microVM-based runtime?
I would use optimized kernel and root filesystem images, prebuilt snapshots, lazy loading, warm pools, and parallel initialization. Metrics should separate scheduling, image retrieval, VM boot, runtime initialization, and user-code startup so each stage can be optimized independently.
How would you implement observability for Compute using OpenTelemetry?
I would instrument request routing, scheduling, VM lifecycle events, runtime execution, storage, and downstream Supabase integrations with traces, metrics, and structured logs. Trace context should propagate from the public request through the edge, microVM, and services such as Postgres or Storage.
How would you safely execute TypeScript workloads using Deno or V8-based isolation?
I would combine OS-level isolation from Firecracker with runtime-level permissions, restricting filesystem, network, subprocess, and environment access. Resource quotas, execution timeouts, dependency controls, and defense-in-depth validation are essential because no single sandbox boundary should be trusted alone.
How would you design scheduling for functions and background tasks across multiple regions?
I would use durable task state, idempotent execution semantics, leases with expiration, and a scheduler that accounts for region, capacity, latency, and data locality. Retries should use exponential backoff and dead-letter handling, while duplicate execution should be safe through idempotency keys.
How would you support WebSocket connections and streaming responses in an edge compute platform?
The system needs connection-aware routing, long-lived resource accounting, heartbeat and timeout management, and graceful migration or termination behavior. Backpressure must be enforced across the user function, network buffers, and downstream services to prevent slow clients from exhausting capacity.
What Rust design considerations are important when building the Compute control plane?
I would use explicit ownership and cancellation boundaries, async tasks with bounded concurrency, typed errors, and careful timeout propagation. Shared state should be minimized, while resource cleanup must be reliable through structured concurrency and RAII-based guards.
How would you integrate Compute with Supabase Auth, Postgres, Storage, and Realtime?
I would standardize identity propagation, short-lived credentials, tenant isolation, and observability across every integration. Connection pooling, regional data placement, retries, and clear consistency guarantees are important to avoid turning downstream services into latency or reliability bottlenecks.
How would you investigate a sudden increase in production function latency?
I would first use dashboards and distributed traces to determine whether the issue comes from routing, scheduling, cold starts, VM capacity, user code, or a dependency. I would correlate latency with deployment versions, regions, resource usage, error rates, and saturation before applying mitigation such as shifting traffic or increasing warm capacity.
How would you improve local development and production parity through the Supabase CLI?
The CLI should provide reproducible local runtimes, matching APIs and permissions, realistic logging, local tracing, and easy inspection of function lifecycle events. DevTools integration and clear emulation limits would help developers debug locally while understanding which behaviors depend on production infrastructure.
๐ Job Summary
