Job Description

Location: Remote — Anywhere (Open to applicants located anywhere around the globe)

Fueled is a leading digital strategy, design, and engineering agency. We are a 300+ person team that has designed and built hundreds of digital products and experiences for brands like Google, Apple, The New York Times, ESPN, Victoria’s Secret, MGM Resorts, Albertsons, and CLEAR.

As a Contract Senior Front-End Engineer at Fueled, your mission is to architect the user-facing foundation of our digital products, transforming complex design visions into fast, accessible, and elegant experiences. You will bridge creative vision and technical execution across WordPress block themes and Next.js/React applications, demonstrating expertise in both custom CSS craftsmanship and Tailwind-based implementations depending on project requirements. Your versatility between technical environments, strategic integration of AI tools in your workflow, and commitment to performance and accessibility will directly shape how millions of users interact with our clients’ brands.

Intentionally remote and globally distributed across six continents, our team thrives in a culture that values flexibility, creativity, and cutting-edge technology. Together, we’re shaping the future of digital experiences.

What you will do:

  • Architect and build large-scale, modular front-end products that set new standards for performance, accessibility, and maintainability while bringing ambitious art direction to life.
  • Elevate the team’s front-end craft through insightful code reviews and by establishing patterns for highly componentized systems that others can follow.
  • Transform complex design visions into elegant, functional experiences that balance aesthetic refinement with technical excellence across all browsers and devices.
  • Serve as a bridge between creative vision and technical reality, confidently presenting solutions to clients and team members that move projects forward.
  • Your code will directly impact millions of users through finely crafted websites and tools that make the web more beautiful, functional, and accessible.

What you will achieve:

  • Within your first month, you’ll be fully integrated into our workflow—submitting quality pull requests, receiving constructive code reviews, and demonstrating efficiency with Fueled’s engineering best practices and systems.
  • By the 60-day mark, you’ll demonstrate mastery of Fueled engineering standards, proactively handling QA feedback, and taking ownership of ticket communication while leading a small project or feature implementation.
  • By the 3-month mark, your component architecture and code review contributions will have positively influenced the quality and consistency of the team’s front-end output.
  • You will have identified and presented a technical pattern or process that enhances our approach to building maintainable front-end systems, potentially improving workflows across multiple projects.
  • Through client-facing engagements, your technical insights will help shape creative and business outcomes, leaving behind work that exemplifies front-end excellence at Fueled beyond your contract term.

About you:

  • You are driven by a craftsperson’s attention to detail in cross-browser/device front-end engineering, confidently moving between WordPress block editor/theme development and Next.js/React projects.
  • Your portfolio or code samples demonstrate problem-solving skills through elegant, maintainable solutions that showcase your technical versatility across different frameworks and environments.
  • You communicate with clarity and confidence, comfortably discussing technical concepts with clients and collaborating effectively with distributed team members.
  • You think in systems and components, excelling at building interfaces that range from custom CSS implementations to efficient Tailwind-based layouts—always prioritizing UX, performance, accessibility, and business objectives.
  • You embrace modern engineering workflows, strategically leveraging AI tools to enhance efficiency and quality while thriving in a remote environment where you take ownership of your work from wherever you choose.

🎯 Who is this job for?

This role is best suited for a Senior Front-End Engineer with extensive experience building scalable, high-performance web applications using modern frontend technologies. The candidate should be proficient in Next.js, React, JavaScript/TypeScript, WordPress block themes, HTML, CSS, Tailwind CSS, component architecture, performance optimization, accessibility, cross-browser development, and AI-assisted workflows. They should be familiar with architecting reusable frontend systems, translating complex designs into production-ready interfaces, conducting code reviews, collaborating with designers and clients, and delivering accessible, maintainable user experiences.

💬 Potential Interview Questions

  1. How would you architect a large-scale React/Next.js application to maximize maintainability and scalability?
Answer: I would organize the application by feature modules, create reusable components, separate business logic into hooks and services, enforce strict TypeScript typing, and establish consistent architectural patterns to support long-term growth.

  2. What rendering strategies does Next.js provide, and when would you use SSR, SSG, ISR, and CSR?
Answer: SSR is ideal for dynamic SEO-critical pages, SSG for static content, ISR for pages requiring periodic updates without full rebuilds, and CSR for highly interactive user-specific experiences.

  3. How do you optimize frontend performance in a production React application?
Answer: I minimize unnecessary re-renders using memoization, implement code splitting and lazy loading, optimize images and fonts, reduce bundle size, and continuously measure performance using Lighthouse and Core Web Vitals.

  4. Describe your experience with WordPress Block Editor (Gutenberg) and custom block development.
Answer: I build reusable custom blocks using React, integrate them with WordPress APIs, create flexible block themes, and ensure editors have intuitive content management while maintaining clean frontend output.

  5. When would you choose Tailwind CSS over custom CSS, and what are the trade-offs?
Answer: Tailwind accelerates development through utility classes and design consistency, while custom CSS provides greater flexibility for unique designs and complex styling requirements. The choice depends on project complexity and design constraints.

  6. How do you ensure accessibility (WCAG) in modern web applications?
Answer: I use semantic HTML, proper ARIA attributes only when necessary, keyboard navigation, sufficient color contrast, accessible forms, screen reader testing, and regular accessibility audits throughout development.

  7. How do you handle state management in large React applications?
Answer: I keep local state close to components, use Context for shared application state when appropriate, and adopt libraries like Redux Toolkit or Zustand only when global state complexity justifies them.

  8. What approaches do you use to ensure cross-browser compatibility?
Answer: I follow web standards, use progressive enhancement, test across major browsers and devices, rely on Autoprefixer where appropriate, and resolve browser-specific issues without compromising maintainability.

  9. How do you perform effective code reviews for frontend projects?
Answer: I focus on correctness, readability, performance, accessibility, maintainability, and consistency with architectural standards while providing constructive feedback that helps improve both the code and the developer.

  10. How do you incorporate AI tools into your frontend development workflow while maintaining code quality?
Answer: I use AI to accelerate repetitive tasks, generate implementation ideas, create tests, and improve documentation, but I always review, validate, and refactor generated code to ensure it meets project standards and business requirements.
